In my opinion, he is just straight up not a good writer, and needs an editor to clean up. Competent, and quite a plotter, yep. But the books creak, the character manipulation is pretty clunky, the constant use of cliffhangers is pretty juvenile, and his prose is beyond overblown. The first part of the first book does not make a good impression.
